Keyword Research By Definition

“A practice search engine optimization professionals use to find and research alternative search terms that people enter into search engines while looking for a similar subject. “

Wikipedia Definition

Essentially, it’s the act of analyzing data on search terms people will use to find things you would like to share with them.

Synonyms Of Keyword Research

Keyword research is known by many different names. Though keyword research is the most commonly used term for the subject, I decided to add this section in so there is no confusion. Some synonyms of the phrase “keyword research” include “KWR”, “SEO Research”, “market research”, “keyphrase research”, “keyword analysis”, or “search term research”.

Why Researching Is Important In Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Researching terms that people type in is essential for knowing how to write content so people can actually find it. By analyzing search queries, we can learn exactly what words are the best fit, and what words to avid. For instance, I thought “Easy SEO Tips” would be the best way to title a recent post I made. I did some search term analysis, and found “Simple SEO Strategies” had a higher likelihood of ranking number one.

How To Know What Words And Phrases Are Best To Target

When I search for phrases to target for my pages, blog posts, and videos I look at two variables. How many people type in that search query, and how hard it will be to rank for those words. In other words, I’m looking at search volume vs. SEO difficulty.

What I’m Looking For

When performing KWR I look for words that are commonly searched with as low of SEO difficulty as possible. Typically, a good search volume is finding the synonym for that topic that has the most searches per month. A good SEO Difficulty is anything below 50.

What I’m Trying To Avoid

When it comes to getting seen or heard, it’s best to go where demand is high but supply is low. If there is a search term that has a super high search volume but an SEO difficulty score of 100, it’s best to pass. I would rather write a post for keyphrases that have lower volume but actually give me a chance of ranking than to write a post no one will ever see.

Tools To Help Perform SEO Keyword Research

When conducting keyword research, there are several online tools that give analytic data on common searches and search difficulty. I decided to tell you about my two favorites. One is a paid subscription while the other is 100% free. I actually currently use the free version because I don’t need the extra perks the other offers.

Ubersuggest is my personal favorite Keyword Research tool. I use this tool almost every single day.

Ubersuggest is a free SEO tool that specializes in generating new keyword ideas. Originally founded as a tool that scraped Google Suggest terms, Ubersuggest was recently acquired by entrepreneur Neil Patel, who has since expanded the feature set significantly.”

KWFinder is a keyword research tool that will help you identify the best long tail keywords to target – those that hit the sweet spot of high search volume and low competition.

Razor Social

Keyword Research is amazing and must be performed for every piece of content you write that search engines will index. By performing just the smallest investigation into the words you use when writing content you can help your search rankings fly through the roof.
